Why Twitter Will Be Able To Ride The Google+ Wave Just Fine?

With the Launch of Google Plus+, the Social Media world has been looking on in amazement as the search engine giants attempt to further their reach. They now have set their sights on the social media world and many have come out with article after article saying that Facebook and Twitter are in Trouble. Google Plus was formally launched on June 28th with limited invitations.

At first, when we thought of this new social media option we were like: “argggg, not another one” (myself included), and thought no one would take the time to migrate. But now just before the month mark was reached, Google+ users reached over 20 million – which clearly suggest that Google Plus has the potential to go a long way.

Not so surprising, it has now become the fastest growing social network, a position which was previously held by Twitter for crossing a significant number of activations within just a few months. Of course, Twitter and Facebook are still the big dogs on campus, but it seems that Facebook is the one that may soon feel the pressure – while Twitter will be able to cope with what comes their way.

Many users, of course, still favour Facebook and Twitter, with Twitter actually working as a social network for professionals and businesses – simply because it isn’t very complicated. What Google plus is at the moment is more of a social network for leisurely things, which is similar to Facebook. That is why I believe Google+ is more of a competitor to Facebook than to Twitter.

Facebook is complicated and your home feed is filled with endless spam – with Google +’s circles, you are able to see what you want and streamline the whole process. Facebook’s new features such as video chat are being matched by arguably cooler ones such as the Hangout group video chat feature. So if there are signs of problems, it seems to be that Facebook will see the rising tides soon. Why will Twitter be safe?

It comes down to a few simple factors:

Users still growing fast

Despite the growth of other social networks, Twitter continues to grow. Twitter has 175 million registered users, but what this actually means is that there are that many accounts and not unique users. This is actually a plus as, unlike Facebook, you are able to have more than one account for different purposes. Whether it be for each department of your business, a blog or even if you are trying to create an online identity for yourself, Twitter allows this to happen. There are 456 tweets per second, a total 572 000 new users joined in March 2011 alone and 1 billion tweets a week – these are some positive signs.

Simplicity

Unlike Facebook and even Google +, Twitter is really easy to use, there is not much to it, and once you have set up your account, a monkey would be able to operate it for you. With a few options, people are able to follow, unfollow, tweet, retweet, adjust settings and view others with the simple click of the button.

Quick

Much like the point above, Twitter is quick and easy – you can tweet from almost anywhere in seconds. All you are doing is simply posting a sentence and you’re done. Everyone who follows you will see it instantly – instant news, instant advertising.

Business or pleasure

Twitter is just as useful for personal pleasure as it is for business matters. For businesses, it is a form of instant advertising and a way to generate traffic towards your website. Unlike the Facebook fan page, the information comes straight to you and it is not a mission find – the simplicity of Twitter is possibly its greatest strength.

Good at what they do

Lastly, and for me their strongest asset, is that Twitter do what they do…best. They are there to bring the information written to you. No longer do you need to search for your friends updates, the latest news or offers from businesses – because they are delivered straight to you, whether on your pc or mobile. They have the formula nailed, and with all the factors above they have created a product that allows people to know what they are getting when they sign up. With this in mind, I can see no reason why Twitter won’t be able to ride the Google+ wave and maybe even come out better for it.

I believe Google+ was designed to feature the best parts of both Twitter and Facebook and that has been achieved admirably and the results prove it. Twitter does have a lot of users and third party apps, the apps especially are a huge advantage for them and it keeps me from using Google+ regularly because the apps can’t connect to the Google+ API (because it has not been released yet).

I have two problems with Facebook; one is the new Message system, and secondly is difficulty with accessing groups of friends. Structurally Facebook is very good but it seriously is in need of a major redesign and change in the way the stream is distributed to users if it is to compete with Google+ in the long-term.

@chachafance A very good take on Google+. I agree, Twitter will hold its own and actually I think Facebook will also. Although some users are leaving, I think the younger generation will stay at Facebook. Facebook has enough money to see them through the long haul and make necessary changes. As you know, I have an account, but seldom use it. But if you send me a tweet, i’ll get it and respond.

Oh, I saw a video about FB that everyone needs to see. It addresses the privacy issues and who is in the background watching us.

@gwensutton I agree that the younger generation will remain at Facebook. In my opinion Google+ is for the older crowd…… maybe 21+ I haven’t seen anyone under that age there as of yet.

@ianonline I agree that Facebook is longer overdue for a redesign/re-haul. I have been using the group friend and selective sharing for over a year now, but it’s just so much easier and more convenient on Google+ I think @kellyvbrown would agree.
