Top 10 Week | Facebook Applications For Social Media Users [List]
Bloggers, websites owners & business owners often use Facebook for networking & promotion purposes. Personally, I’m more into the social aspect of Facebook more than the business networking aspect, but it’s always nice to make new business contacts. It’s hard to believe that when Facebook first started out, it was only for high school & college students; it has really come a long way.
You may or may not have heard or use some of these applications but I just wanted to highlight the “Top 10″ I think are best for social media users (in no particular order).
As Seen On
A great way to display all of the social media sites you’re a member of. Unlike “My Web Profile” (which I have also listed below), it shows the site logo along with your username on the site.
“Add links on your Facebook profile page to profile pages from: MySpace, Orkut, Yahoo360, Flickr, LinkedIn, LiveJournal, delicious, digg, Last.fm, Technorati, Blogger, aNobii, bebo, hi5, piczo, friendster, OkCupid, tumblr, IMDb, Tagged, Virb, Spokeo, Google Reader, Webshots, YouTube, eBay, GreatestJournal, Vox, Listal, TVcom, twofifty, Newsvine, Live Spaces, deviantART, twitter, kuler, cork’d, Ourmedia, Yelp, StumbleUpon, Amazon, BookCrossing, Postcrossing, LibraryThing, AnywhereFM… you get the idea.”
Update: This Facebook app is dead, so instead I suggest YouTube. With this app you can automatically share your YouTube activity (likes, favorites, uploads, etc) on Facebook.
This is one of the most talked about social media sites right now, so of course it has to be on this list. The Twitter application is an extremely easy way to update your Twitter status right from your Facebook profile. There’s also the TwitterSync application which seems to be broken right now (at the fault of Twitter). It allows you to “update your Twitter Status via IM, SMS, or Twitter itself, and shortly afterward TwitterSync will make your Facebook Status match your Twitter Status.”
Profile.to
This Facebook app lets you “creates a short, easy to remember personal web address to take people directly to your Facebook profile, page or group, so you can share the link with other people, post it on forums, show it on your MySpace page or print it on your business cards.” This is really a nice application because Facebook doesn’t give you a regular address like http://facebook.com/socialwebtools. Instead, you get this long address with numbers & stuff that you’ll never remember. This application solves that problem & makes it easier for you to share your Facebook address across the Web.
Update: Seeing that we can now customize our Facebook URLs, this app is not necessary or needed.
My Bookmarks
This allows you to share all your bookmarks with your friends; you can even upload your own bookmark images. “Let them know where you are on the internet. Share the web pages you visit with friends.”
Update: This Facebook app is a goner, so I would suggest Amplify. You can use it to autopost text, images and/or links to various sites (including Facebook of course) at once. With the handy extension, you can clip content from any Web page in your browser. Amplify makes sharing fun.
Web Link
This Facebook app is a personal favorite application of mine. What it does is puts a screenshot of any website you choose, right on your Facebook profile. It’s a great way to promote your blog, website, or any other site & gain more traffic. “If you want a second link, try using the MySpace Link app which does the same thing.” This is a very useful application & also easy to use (takes 1 minute to setup).
Update: This Facebook app is also now nonexistent, so I would suggest FriendFeed. You will of course need a FriendFeed acount. This app lets you post updates to FriendFeed plus share photos and files all from Facebook. There’s is also an option to cross post to Twitter; so it’s like two sites in one.
Ping.fmhttps://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=6394109615
Ping.fm is a Web tool that many are really loving right now, including myself. Now, not only can you access Ping.fm from Profilactic, as well as numerous other convenient ways (email, gtalk, etc), you can also access it from Facebook. “Ping.fm allows you to post messages easily to your favorite social networks [...]. Adding the Ping.fm Facebook application will enable you to set your status through Ping.fm as well.” Too easy!
Web Profiles
Here is another personal favorite of mine. It serves the same purpose as the “As Seen On” application listed above, but it’s more compact & space efficient. Plus, it supports 181 social media sites! “Easily link to your accounts, of other online services and social networks, from your Facebook profile.” with this Facebook app, all you’ll see showing is a tiny icon to represent each profile.
My LinkedIn Profile
This app allows you to “promote your LinkedIn account with a badge on your Facebook profile.” Basically it’s just a badge linking to your profile, but it’s still pretty useful. The badge helps to make the link stand out among all the text you may have on your Facebook profile. To go along with the LinkedIn theme, the LinkedIn Contacts application “allows you to see and share your LinkedIn Contacts” & seems to be very popular as well.
StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon, one of the most addicting ways to spend time online, now forces us to spend even more time on Facebook! “Add StumbleUpon to share your favorites right on your profile. You can also Stumble your friends’ favorites by checking out your ‘What’s New tab’.” Gotta love it though.
Update: This Facebook app has changed; instead of having StumbleUpon on Facebook, you’re directed to the actual StumbleUpon site in order to start using the service.
mEgo
“mEgo is the first dynamic visual profile on the web. Share your Flickr and Photobucket pictures, YouTube videos, Amazon wishlists and more with your mEgo.” In my opinion, it’s easier if you go to the actual mEgo website to create your mEgo and then install the mEgo Facebook application and login to your account. mEgo is nice because it’s portable and saves you time when filling out “about me” sections on profiles. Of course, the site you use it on will need to allow the embedding of flash widgets. Since Facebook doesn’t allow any type of embedding, this application is the solution to that problem.
Update: mEgo is now less social based and more about creating an avatar to look like you. If you’re one who doesn’t like to show your face on your profiles, mEgo will come in handy.
Is there something not on this list that you think should be on this list? Feel free to leave it in a comment.
