Why People Hate Your Website [List]

The end objection of any website is going to be to get those conversions but in some cases many websites will struggle to keep that traffic past the first page. If that’s you and your site’s bounce rate is through the roof it’s not easy being critical about your own website especially if you’ve invested time and money into it. Here are a few things to check to make sure you’re traffic is sticking around.

Too Vain

You either think your website is meant to be a work of art (with the emphasis on art rather than work) or you gave your web developer free rain and they’ve got several new tools and plugins they wanted to play with. If your website is concentrating more on looking like something out of a science fiction special effects department it’s going to send your traffic running.

Why People Hate Your Website - You're So Vain

At the end of the day it’s your business website, it’s either meant to be selling something or offering some form of information not a test of patience for your users. They need to be able to find the information they’re looking for straight away and there’s a good chance they don’t have an advanced degree in computer science so they’re just going to go back to the SERP’s and click on your competitor if it’s too over the top.

Pop Ups & Questionnaires

Your website may have to need to make money and you may be running user testing to see what people think of you site but throwing these things in their face the second they try to load the home page is going to send them running. It’s the equivalent of walking into a shop and having the sales assistant shove something under your nose and ask if you want to buy it before you’ve even had a chance to look around.

If you want to know what they think of your site wait until they’ve had time to form a proper opinion and drop the pop ups because for every person who actually makes the conversion, fifty other potential customers bounced right off the site because of them.

Automatic Noise

If you’re working in a quiet office and you’ve forgot to turn your sound off the last thing you want is a website that’s going to blast music at you or start shouting at you with no warning. If you have the option to play video on your site offer your traffic the option rather than forcing it on them.

Instinctively over 40% of traffic will just leave the site if it started making noise rather than finding time to hunt the source of the nose and figure it out how to shut it up and that’s a lot of traffic you’re simply handing to your competitors.

The most infuriating thing to come across with any website is one that doesn’t actually explain what the site is about.

Clear As Mud

The most infuriating thing to come across with any website is one that doesn’t actually explain what the site is about. Even the most technically minded internet users can struggle to find out what a site is actually selling and if that’s your site you need to make sure you’re simplifying your content.

You have three seconds to convince your traffic who you are, what you’re selling and why they should stay on your site and not go off to your competitors. Content may be king but that doesn’t mean your home page needs to sound like it’s in a serious relationship with a thesaurus. You don’t need to use half a dozen big long words when a couple of simple ones will do.
