Los Angeles University Welcomes Social Media with Open Arms

I don’t know about you but when I was in college (about 10 years ago) we didn’t have majors or careers dealing with social media or the Web. Trust me, if I had the option to major in something like Internet Marketing, I would have jumped at the chance. Well now, more and more colleges and universities are adopting Internet related programs as well as integrating social media into their internet careers.

As you will see by quite a few of the job openings I found at University of Redlands (a top university), they truly understand the importance of social media. Listed below are three positions offered on their website that are clearly geared around the Web along with a few points of interest.

Web Writer

• Develops and manages social media interactions on multiple platforms.
• Assists in developing Web and social media policies and plans.
• Organizes, develops and writes Web and other interactive content that adheres to University and general best interactive writing practices, including SEO guidelines.

Requires: Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, creative writing, communications, web design, or a related discipline.

This would have been my dream job 10 years ago but unfortunately, jobs like this were very rare back then.

Director of Public Relations

• Stays current with public relations, media relations and social media trends, issues and opportunities.
• Develops original copy and/or edits copy of others for the Web site, online internal and alumni newsletters, alumni magazines, flyers, enrollment brochures, posters and other collateral.

Requires: Bachelor’s Degree in English, communications, journalism or public relations.

Web Manager

• Manages and assesses Web content, content development, improves methods of presentation, site promotion and search engine optimization.
• Generates analytical reports and manages Web related data.
• Assists in developing Web and social media policies and plans.

Requires: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Web Design/Development or a related discipline.

Here is yet another dream job that I would have loved the opportunity to obtain.

Even if you have the experience that these jobs are looking for but don’t have a degree, you’re still out of luck. Luckily, the University of Redlands offers great programs through their College of Arts & Sciences that can prepare you for the career of your dreams. Whether you are looking to get a bachelors degree or get a masters degree, they are the best California university that you will find.

It’s never too late to get a degree which is one of the reasons why I’ve been contemplating returning to school myself. With the horrible economy I know it would really benefit me to get a business degree or an Internet related degree. Plus with the abundance of social media jobs (as listed above) it would definitely be in my best interest so that I could do something that I love.
