Livemocha | Learn A New Language Online While Social Networking [Review]

Do you love social networking? Do you want to learn a new language? Did you know that you can do both on Livemocha?

Livemocha is a fun & free way to learn a new language right from the comfort of your home. You can learn English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, German, Icelandic, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian & Mandarin Chinese with easy to use online courses. I really think this is a great idea considering that many people would love to learn to speak a new language.

Livemocha allows you to enroll in FREE online courses, learning at your own pace. Each language has four courses, 101, 102, 201 & 202. Courses 101 & 102 are 50 hours of learning and 201 & 202 are 30 hours of learning. Each course then contains 6 parts which involve reading, listening, writing & more; these courses really get you involved & also include appropriate pictures that relate to what you’re learning.

Each course defined in their own words:

101 – For students starting with the basics with little or no exposure to the language.
102 – For students who can start putting sentences together. Students should be able to introduce themselves and understand some instructions.
201 – For students who are comfortable enough to ask a few questions and follow simple conversations.
202 – For students who can have simple back and forth dialogs and follow more complicated conversations.

Besides being a language learning site, Livemocha is built around social network that allows you to meet new people, make new friends, send messages, etc. The profiles are not very extensive but to me, it really doesn’t matter since I’m mainly there to learn.

If you’re looking to learn a new language for fun, business or just to better yourself, I really suggest you sign up for Livemocha. The site is very easy to use & you’ll be speaking a new language in no time.

Well the idea of social networking and learning a new idea is unique but will it catch up with everyone?? I know it will with most of the people but I suppose it won’t create a huge hype like Facebook etc. But love the idea. I personally like to learn new things. And certainly will try this out. Cheers

Of course, with English being my native language, it is more natural (and quicker) for me to write in English. On the other hand, I am located in Germany and have many contacts who – though they speak proficient to (very) good English – also appreciate the ease of reading updates in their native language.

At the moment, I haven’t come up with a solution that feels right for me and my circumstances just yet. Your tips, however, have given me some valuable food for thought.

    Thanks again!

In my opinion Learning and practice a foreign language using social media is a good way to learn, when traditional methods of learning something, anything, don’t seem to work for you internet learning is the best way in that case.

Got to be honest with this one – there’s a lot of great new web 2.0 social networks but this one just doesn’t seem to have the edge. Gave it a try but didn’t provide anything unique enough to make me go back on it regularly…

Live Mocha is awesome! I learn Portugese there. It’s a good way to learn a language step by step. It’s also nice that always a lot of people help you to correct your assignments, and that you have to correct other people’s assignments, in this way you learn from your mistakes in a fun and social way.
