Feedly | A More Social and Magazine-Like Start Page For FF3 [Review]
Feedly is an rss feed reader extension that (for now) only works in Firefox. In my own opinion Feedly is comparable to Netvibes and iGoogle, yet it’s a definite competitor of Google Reader. I’m still in the process of customizing my Feedly account and I must admit that so far I’m kind of confused with it.
Despite my confusion though, I really feel that Feedly is something that I can make use of and grow to love. Their guided tour does a good job of introducing you to the site and showing you some of the possibilities for your rss feeds.
How it works is that the Feedly welcome wizard “learns” from your existing personalizations such as your bookmarks, Netvibes, Twitter, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Friendfeed and more; it then applies them to your account. There’s also various customization options for you to choose from such as adjusting the width, appearance and viewing options.
Feedly uses Google for authentication and integrates with Google Search, so you will need a Google account in order to use it.
Feedly is also integrated with Google Reader, so any subscriptions you add to it will be added to Google Reader. If you use Google Reader, all of your subscriptions will also show in Feedly. Any article you read or recommend in Feedly will be marked as read and shared in Google Reader and vise versa.
Of course Feedly also integrates Twitter (what site doesn’t). The Feedly and Twitter integration allows you to easily spread the word about articles you find interesting. The wall gives you a quick overview of all the articles recommended and annotated by your friends. It combines your activity on both Twitter and Feedly.
Feedly is still in beta and from what I have experienced so far, there are still a few bugs that need to be fixed. I’m still questioning a lot of things about it, especially since there seems to be no “how to’s” or FAQs. Yet, I’m very eager to see how Feedly progresses and what new types of functionality will be added in the future.
I can definitely see myself spending countless hours everyday, reading new content via rss feeds on Feedly. What about you?
