Almost every blog these days runs on Wordpress. It’s a great blogging platform, and with the release of version 2.7 it’s a good time to go over some Wordpress plugins that you should be using. Here are my top 5 that every blog must have:
- Wordpress Database Backup – This is #1 for a reason. This plugin will backup your blog on a schedule you set, and either email it or ftp it to wherever you tell it to. No more worrying about hacks, crashes and losing all your posts. As the Ronco guy used to say – “Just Set It, and Forget it”.
- All in One SEO Pack – Wordpress isn’t really optimized out of the box for search engines. There are significant duplicate content issues for one, and the inability to customize titles, meta tags as another. This plugin pretty much takes care of all these issues with a simple click of a button.
- Sociable – This cute little plugin automatically adds social bookmarking sites to your blog (stumbleupon, digg and many more) and makes it much, much easier for your readers to submit/vote/bookmark your site, and sending you more visitors!
- Super Cache – If your site has ever been featured on digg, you’ll notice that it may crash. Super Cache creates static parts of your blog and essentially makes it digg proof. A must have for any serious blogger.
- Akismet - This may sound like a no brainer, but not everyone uses Akismet. I’m not really sure why – but if you’re doing any amount of blogging, you’re going to get spammed, A LOT. Sign up for API, install the plugin, and make your life significantly easier.
